BLANCHARD THRILLED WITH SPA EXPERIENCE
23 June 2008

Tim Blanchard raced at the famous Belgian Grand Prix circuit of Spa- Francorchamps at the weekend, again earning another valuable bag of points to further extend his second place standing in the British Formula Ford Championship.

After qualifying his Jaylec Mygale second at the famous circuit, the young Victorian finished second in the weekend's opening race and followed up with a fourth place in the second and final race to again stake claims as the only driver in the series capable of challenging Wayne Boyd for the Championship.

The experience alone of racing at the Spa circuit was something Blanchard was thrilled with, a famous track that lived up to all expectations for the AMSF International Rising Star.

"What an awesome track, it definitely lives up to its reputation as one of the best tracks in the world," explained Blanchard.

"Just the commitment required and the speed at certain corners is amazing, it was a fantastic experience and it was great to have some good results."

The long straight at the Spa circuit played a large in role in race proceedings, with slip streaming allowing for a host of lead changes in typical Formula Ford fashion.

Blanchard was able to stave off a number challenges from Chris Maliepaard in the opening race to hold on for second place on the podium behind series leader Boyd.

Blanchard was leading proceedings briefly before Boyd took full advantage of a slip stream opportunity to pass and take the lead.

"A safety car was deployed early after the opening lap, and on the restart Maliepaard got past me but I was able to get the position back and from there couldn't quite catch Boyd after an intense battle for second place."

The second race proved to be another challenge for the reigning Australian Formula Ford Champion as the leader dropped a wheel off the track and sent his counterparts flying everywhere trying to avoid contact.

"Unfortunately I probably chose the wrong route to avoid contact and got pushed back to sixth.

Blanchard quickly went about making up some ground on his way to setting the fastest lap of the race on the 7km circuit.

Sitting in second position, team mate Victor Correa forced the Blanchard wide; costing him three positions as he slipped to fifth before flying home passed Chris Malieparrd to salvage fourth position in what he described as some of the best racing of the year.

"In the end a track like this produces that kind of racing, when you are doing lap times of two and a half minutes there are going to be plenty of opportunities for passing and really good racing," said Blanchard.

The series moves to Brand Hatch for racing on the 13-14 July, with Jamun Racing due to test at the circuit this Friday.
