Tim on top in Townsville
Tim Blanchard achieved a stunning overall round win in 2010 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series today in Townsville. Not only did he accumulate enough points for the round win he also took outright victory in the third and final race of the round.
The reverse ‘top 10’ grid line up in the second leg was a mixed bag as Tim was run wide by a charging Nick Percat and scrapped the wall. Tim however held his calm and raced back into a podium 3rd position after series leader Steve Owen got by both he and Percat. This result meant a great starting position for the all important 18 lap final from 3rd position on the grid.
The final was a wild affair with race leaders Steve Owen and David Russell getting together on lap 4 jumping Tim from fourth to second. He then set about chasing down rival James Moffat for a further 9 laps. At this point it seemed that the gap had settled and Tim was heading for a second place in the # 999 Sonic Falcon. But Townsville has been a track that has continued to throw up trouble and it came for Moffat as he was trying to lap backmarker Wayne Miles. Moffat was caught out and spun and Blanchard needed no better invitation but to pounce into the lead. A lead he would keep until the chequered flag some five laps later.
The rookie V8 Supercar driver had pulled off a maiden win on one of the toughest tracks in the country. The other podium places for the weekend’s racing were held by David Russell and Steve Owen. The victory today also cemented Tim in second place overall in the 2010 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Championship.
Quotes from Tim post race:
'What a weekend! The reverse grid race this morning was a good result with a podium, but it is nothing like taking the chequered flag to win the final race and the round!’ Tim said after the podium celebration. “I can’t than the Sonic crew and my sponsors enough. This result is just great for our team!’ Tim added
“I thought the third race was going to be a tough one but knew we did have a chance. With Owen and Russell carving each other up, it meant I just had to drive cleanly and stay out of trouble. When I arrived and saw Moff off the track on Lap 13, I just could not believe it. We were through but still had Percat and fast finishing David Reynolds to cover’
‘It is just a great feeling and a top effort by all the guys!’ Tim smiled
