tim's travel tales

March 2, 2008
Well I have finally made it to England, the home of motor racing to take on the British Formula Ford Championship! This year I will be driving for Jamun Racing which have won the last three championships and will be part of their international four driver line up which includes drivers from Ireland, England, Brazil and of course Australia.

I have adjusted to the new car and team fairly well and after test days at Oulton Park, Rockingham and Silverstone I am starting to set some decent times but as always in testing you don’t know where you are until you get to the first round. The tracks have been simply awesome and a real challenge especially Oulton Park which is fairly fast and requires real commitment.

The toughest part so far has been adapting to the slick tyres which is the main difference between Australian and British Formula Ford as in Australia we race on a grooved tyre, but I am slowly learning to be a smoother driver and learning to get the weight of the car on the front tyres before committing to the corner and my times are getting better. The testing schedule is fairly busy comprising of two days testing most weeks which means by the time we get to the first round we will have completed eight test days!

Away from racing I have been adjusting to life in Europe pretty well. I went to Antwerp, Belgium for the first few days after I left Australia and stayed with a family friend. I was able to do some snowboarding in Holland while I was there which was great fun, one day I might be decent enough at it so that I stop falling over! Back in England I have bought a Vauxhall Astra road car but am still looking for an apartment to live in as it has been a much larger mission than I imagined it would be…

Other than that I am slowly working on dispelling some myths I have discovered England has about Australia which need correction such as:
- We don’t drink Fosters in fact we rarely see Fosters at the pub at all
- We do know England won the Ashes a few years ago but I seem to recall winning the last Ashes 5-0??? (I avoid any talk about Rugby for obvious reasons)
- I don’t really know any Australians that cook shrimps on the BBQ
- Its called Soccer not Football
- And YES we all have a pet Kangaroo in our backyard, mine's called Skippy!!

That is about all that is happening at the moment. Hope you enjoy the website, it will be regularly updated to ensure you can keep up to date with how Australia goes taking on the world in Formula Ford in 2008!!!!
